Movie Review: ‘Lawless’

I don’t always write a review when I go and watch a recent movie. But after seeing “Lawless” tonight, I decided that I had to write something for the blog. I don’t believe that a lot of people had heard of this movie, though it does have quite a few “big name” actors – Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, just to name a few. I had never actually seen the previews on television until this past week, so it’s not a surprise that my friends and I were the only ones in the theater Saturday night.

Before I saw the movie, I tried to describe it to others. I simply said that it was about moonshiners. Now, I can say that it is a brutal film about a group of brothers/moonshiners in a small Virginia town during the Prohibition era.

While this film did set my nerves on edge and made me tense the entire movie, I can say that it was very well written (by the way, it was based on a true story). The look and feel of the movie portrayed the era perfectly and I would not mind having the soundtrack. All the actors did a wonderful job, even if I found Tom Hardy a bit hard to understand at times. Shia LaBeouf stole the film in my opinion. His character evolved throughout the film in a way that made complete sense to the audience and you rooted for him the entire time. The interactions between Jack Bondurant (Shia LaBeouf) and Betha Minnix (Mia Wasikowska) were a much needed bright spot in the movie. I also loved Jessica Chastain as Maggie Beauford. She is such a stunning woman.

Like I told my friend, this was a good movie, but not a movie that I would like to see again. It’s too gritty for my taste and I don’t enjoy movies that tear my nerves up. Basically, it is the perfect guy movie. I am glad that I had the opportunity to check it out and I hope you do the same.

Be sure to let me know what you think of it!
